Abstract

This study investigates the intersection of environmental sustainability and thesis management in Indian academic libraries, focusing on the evolving roles of library professionals amidst digital transformation. It aims to assess current practices, perceptions, and strategies related to digital and green thesis workflows. A descriptive survey was conducted among 136 library professionals from Indian universities and colleges using a structured questionnaire. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, and exploratory factor analysis to uncover patterns in sustainability attitudes and digital adoption. Results indicate a significant shift toward electronic theses and institutional repositories, yet many institutions continue to rely on print-based systems due to legacy practices. Two key themes emerged from factor analysis on sustainability perceptions: Improves efficiency and promote sustainable archiving. Similarly, perceptions on digital theses yielded themes of usability and accessibility. Senior professionals and those with more experience showed stronger alignment with sustainable digital practices. Green strategies like promoting e-resources and using energy-efficient tools are widespread, but internal digital transformation (e.g. paperless communication) remains limited. Limitations include a focus on NIRF-ranked institutions and a quantitative, cross-sectional design; future work can add qualitative insights to explain low-adoption areas such as paperless communication.
