Abstract

Background Endometrial carcinoma is one of the most common gynecological malignancies in developed and developing countries and its morbidity and mortality is rising yearly. Various factors including Age, FIGO stage, Tumor grade, Histological type, Lympho-vascular invasion, Biomarkers like ER, PR, PTEN and P53 play a major role in predicting prognosis of endometrial carcinomas. Aims To study the expression of ER and PR among endometrial carcinomas. Materials and methods This study included 22 cases of hysterectomy which were histologically confirmed as endometrial carcinomas. After histopathological confirmation, paraffin blocks were selected for immunohistochemical evaluation of Estrogen and Progesterone receptor expression. Results of immunohistochemistry were correlated with various clinicopathological parameters. Statistical analysis was done with SPSS - version 24. Results Among 22 cases, 72.7% were postmenopausal with mean age of 54.54 years. Histologically 72.7% were endometrioid type, with 27.3%, 36.4% and 36.4% cases showing features of Grade I, II and III respectively. 27.3%, 50% and 22.7% cases were in FIGO Stage I, II and III respectively with 22.7% cases showing LVI. 68.2% and 59.1% cases were positive for Estrogen and Progesterone receptor. Among endometrioid type, 87.5% cases were ER positive and 75% cases were PR positive. Among FIGO Stage I tumours, 100% cases were ER and PR positive. Conclusions Estrogen and Progesterone receptor expression in endometrial carcinomas play a vital role in predicting prognosis. Hence a greater number of similar studies is recommended.
