Abstract

With the increasing integration of renewable generation and electric vehicle (EV) usage in our energy supply, development of advanced energy management approaches is advancing in smart grids. Bidirectional energy flow takes place with Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) applications where EVs and the grid can communicate to balance the grid, shave peaks, and make the system more efficient. This proposed work design and analyzes the bi-directional buck-boost converter which provides opportunity to optimize hybrid energy storage systems (HESS), for next generations of V2G exploitation. The converter has exhibited proficient power management from both a battery and super capacitor storage unit, has good variability in the voltage, and can switch easily between charging and discharging operation mode. Characteristics of the integrated power converter included control of bi-directional power flow, better dynamic response of power flow, and also reduced energy loss due to synchronous switching. Simulations and experimental results from the converter show it can also increase the performance, reliability, and life of the hybrid storage in V2G applications. The proposed converter is a further step in achieving richer, smarter energy networks, with solutions that are resilient, and provide the opportunity to facilitate sustainable transport. © 2025 IEEE.
