Abstract

Aims: To determine if nickel released from stainless steel brackets has cytotoxic effects on gingival fibroblasts. Materials and Methods: Brackets, an essential part of fixed orthodontics, were tested for cytotoxic activity using MTT and comet assays. Results: Nickel leached from brackets can damage fibroblasts. Conclusion: Minimal nickel concentration of 1.18 μg can damage human gingival fibroblasts. Different bracket brands release non-uniform nickel levels. © 2014 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
