Abstract
A series of 19 surgical site infections caused by rapidly growing Mycobacteria (Mycobacterium fortuitum and M. chelonae) was reported from different regions in South India. All patients presented with painful draining lesions. Cultures confirmed the organisms, which were sensitive to clarithromycin, amikacin and linezolid. The study emphasizes the need for high clinical suspicion in chronic postoperative wound infections.
